How do I make a temporary emergency roof repair?
Answer...
As with all things in life, it depends on various factors. Temporary repairs can be made by home owners with tarps or synthetic felt paper found at B&Q or other hardware stores.
If it is a composition shingle style roof you would find the area that is leaking on the roof. Lift the shingles tabs up, and tuck the tarp underneath the shingles. Use felt caps to fasten the tarp to the roof deck. Make sure the felt caps are underneath the lifted shingle tabs.
This can be tricky, because sometimes old shingle tabs just will not come up without tearing (even for professionals).
Pull the rest of the tarp down tight over the leaking area. Use the same method to attach the bottom of the tarp. For the sides of the tarp we typically use 1x2’s and fasten the tarp to the 1x2’s very well. We then use a small amount of long nails to penetrate through the shingles into the roof deck.
Note: anytime you put a nail through the face of a shingle you are damaging it and it will need to be replaced. Try and put nails through the face of as few shingles as possible unless absolutely necessary. Also, tarping does not work well at all on flat roofs, only on sloped roofs.
Sometimes leaks are caused by fairly simple to fix issues and sometimes by larger problems.
I can’t tell you how often we have had home owners take things into their own hands and end up damaging their roof. I mean, to a much worse extent than if they had called us straight out - or gotten some direction from us - before taking action.
How do I choose the right roofing company?
Answer...
When it comes to your home, ensuring the best quality is paramount. This applies especially to roofing in County Durham.
Here are some tips that can help you select the right roofing company for your roofing project:
Research: Look into local roofing companies, check reviews, and assess their experience.
Review Roofing Work: Examine past projects to gauge quality and suitability for your needs.
Check Licenses for roofing materials and energy, etc: Ensure the company holds necessary licenses and certifications, and they will provide the paperwork for insurance, Energy certification, etc.
Roof Repair & Other Services Offered: Confirm the company offers the services you require.
Roofing Project Assessment: Opt for a company that conducts a thorough roof inspection before providing estimates.
Warranty: Inquire about warranties for materials and workmanship.
With these tips, you can confidently choose the right roofing company for your project.
1. Silicone Sealant: Silicone-based sealants offer a simple application process. You’re roofer can easily come in, rip it off, clean and patch, no extra costs involved.
When is it a bad idea? Silicone won’t stick well to a wet surface. While suitable for small repairs, they aren't ideal for larger damaged areas. They may not adhere well to certain roofing materials and are best suited for short-term fixes.
2. Butyl Sealant: These sealants provide versatility by sticking to various surfaces, even when wet. They're easy to apply and remove, making them suitable for temporary repairs.
When is it a bad idea? They degrade over time when exposed to air and UV light (the sun). After about a month, butyl can be detrimental to a roof. Be warned, it makes a huge stringy mess, and get’s everywhere. If you’re butyl isn’t sticky and stringy, it’s of poorer quality.3. Fix-All Roof Tape (with Butyl bottom): DO NOT BUY ASPHALT OR ANY BITUMEN BASED tape. Products like these offer convenience for patching long cuts and can last for years. Effective for temporary fixes, and can work wet. Not as well as some other products but good for a temporary fix.
When is it a bad idea? They are highly likely to void warranties and require complete removal for permanent solutions.
4. Ice and Water Shield or Similar Underlayment: While these products can halt leaks temporarily.
When is it a bad idea? These products are incompatible with TPO, PVC, EPDM, CSPE/Hypalon, Metal, Modified, BUR, Shingles, SPF, and more, and may accelerate the deterioration of surrounding areas. Whatever they touch will not only void a warranty completely but quickly rot out surrounding roofing materials,5. Plastic Cement: Ideal for quick fixes on specific roofing materials: Modified, shingles, and BUR. Plastic cement is affordable and can be applied underwater.
When is it a bad idea? Only to be used on these compatible surfaces: Modified, shingles, and BUR.6. Avoid "Fix-Everything" Products: Products marketed as universal solutions, such as Flex-Tape or Flex Seal, are generally not recommended for roofing repairs. Industry professionals advise against their use due to ineffectiveness and potential long-term issues.
When selecting a temporary repair method, consider factors such as the type of roofing material, the extent of damage, and the expected duration of the fix.
While these temporary solutions can provide immediate relief, it's essential to consult with a professional roofer for long-term solutions to ensure the safety and integrity of your roof.
Better still, call us immediately and get the professionals to do any temporary fix required. That way, you'll not have to deal with a sticky mess, or a more expensive solution due to using the incorrect materials for your roof.
